Wild and Sacred: Coming Home to Our Natural Selves
Women’s Retreat – September 14-17, 2023
Spend 4 days on retreat and leave behind life’s demands to slow down, create art, and immerse yourself in nature. As women, we carry many responsibilities. For a few days, with nature as our teacher, experience the satisfying freedom of letting go and attending lovingly to yourself.
Imagine…
Standing in a circle around a dancing fire under the bright stars of Muskoka, you close your eyes, and feel your body relax as you are lovingly cleansed by the sweet burning of sage and cedar.
You feel nourished and enlivened, grounded in the moment, after enjoying a few days surrounded by the beauty of nature, the spirit of the trees, the flowing of water, and connecting with a group of women who have compassionately sat with you as you’ve connected to deeper parts of yourself.
You smell the earthiness of the burning logs and can hear the lapping of water by the shore in the near distance, where just this morning you took part in a ritual of embracing courage and letting go.
You feel lighter and more joyful than you’ve felt in a long time as you prepare to release into the flames all the ways you’ve hampered your natural expression and now forge a new way of being, guided by your own wild wisdom.
You’re invited to join us on a sacred retreat to explore and connect to the truest expression of your essence with a deep knowing that you are loved and supported, just as you are.
We know you will take away so much from this retreat…
Experience the relief of letting go of the judgments, expectations, and fears that you have carried all your life and that have held you back.
Connect to the wisdom that there is not one “right” way to be or do anything and that there is no such thing as “perfect”.
Take up space to freely express yourself without censorship, so that you gain clarity about your values and what you stand for.
Explore why you hold onto so many responsibilities and obligations for others (spoiler: you were probably conditioned from childhood) and instead learn to feel good honouring and putting your needs first.
Drop your masks and armour and experience the joy and freedom of being yourself–uninhibited and natural.
The Location
We will be staying in the Heart of Muskoka, in a town called Bracebridge, built around a waterfall on the Muskoka River.
Muskoka, the quaint and charming region affectionately known as Canada’s cottage country, is consistently named one of the best places to visit in Canada. Known for its spectacular nature, the rich mosaic of forests, iconic wind-swept pines, and chains of rivers and lakes provide an awe-inspiring backdrop.
Our accommodations will be a private cottage on the Muskoka River—the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.
There will be lots of personal time outside of planned activities for you to enjoy.
Sip your morning tea on the deck while listening to the birds.
Walk down to the river where you can enjoy the stillness of the water or go for a swim in the clean river water.
Sit by the fire pit and lose yourself in the flickering dance of the flames.
Take a soak in the luxurious hot tub and allow your body and mind to unwind.
Feel like a kid again and let your inhibitions melt away by sliding off the dock and crashing into the water!
At night, lay down on the wooden deck and take in the vastness of the night sky.
Water activities will be available and include paddle boards, kayaks, and a paddle boat.
There are 3 bicycles to explore the paths along the river.
Also, enjoy a newly installed 10-person Wood Fire Barrel Sauna!
Located 1 hr 45 min from Toronto, it is the perfect sanctuary to unplug.
Our Meals
Prepare to have your tummies smiling with delicious and wholesome vegetarian meals prepared by our good friend, Clara.
Think lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, delicious herbs and spices, and one of Clara’s specialities are delectable salads that will have you coming back for more.
As Deirdre, one of our faciliators, loves to share, “I’m looking forward to not having to cook!”
Yes, won’t that be a treat?
Facilitators will guide retreatants through how to eat meals mindfully while connected to the interconnectedness of all life forms on the planet.
At the retreat, you will enjoy food that is made with love and care, enjoyed together around the table–family-style.
We’re happy to accommodate all food preferences, please let us know!
Activities
Our activities will be inspired by the four elements of Earth, Air, Water and Fire, which can be found in all living things.
EARTH
Drive down the scenic driveway to the cottage and be greeted by endless trees eventually leading down to the sandy bank of the river.
Our first night together will be rooted in the element of Earth as we become acquainted with one another and hear more about what to expect from our four days together.
The element of Earth is about groundedness, taking root and nourishment.
Together, we will take part in our first sacred ceremony as we honour the land, the ancestors and the elements, ground ourselves and set our intentions in booklets that will be part of our art project throughout the retreat.
We will focus on letting go of any outside distractions so that we can attune ourselves to the present moment.
AIR
In the morning, wake up to guided meditation on cushions in the late summer breeze as we embrace the element of air, representing communication, creativity, and expression.
On our first full day together we will explore our multitude of selves, announce our values, and find our voice as we take part in teachings, reflective exercises, and chanting.
The afternoon will consist of a deep relaxation session, as we fully allow our minds and bodies to relax to music and poetry. This will be followed by a simple yet meaningful community art experience led by our resident artist, Deirdre. You absolutely do NOT have to be an artist, and we guarantee everyone will have the skills to participate (she’s a retired art teacher who has taught people from all walks of life).
Our evening will be nourished as we gather together in circle sharing, and we will end the day with a tea and dance ceremony. As we sit together with our tea, we move away from our thinking mind and bring presence to the present moment. In connection to our inner spirit and wisdom, we also connect to our bodies in dance and movement.
WATER
The next morning, we will once again wake up our bodies and minds with guided meditation. This time, we will do it by the river, as we honour the element of water. We will take part in a practice of surrender and release as we dive into the cleansing waters (life jackets available for those who do not swim) as we are reminded of the impermanence of life.
Our teaching for the day will be on the topic of how we are not only a part of nature, but that we are, in fact, nature herself. We will expand our sense of Self to include our ancestors and touch on the realization that we are a part of the wave of descendents.
We will also explore our emotions, their roles, and the practice of holding and processing our emotions so that we allow them to flow instead of suppressing and running away from their manifestation.
The afternoon will again consist of a deep relaxation session followed by a community art experience. We will continue to build on our creation from the past two days.
Our circle sharing in the evening will be an opportunity for us to be witnessed and held as we process what has arrived for us during the day.
FIRE
We will end our day with a sacred fire ceremony, representing transformation, growth and change. It will be a symbolic event to support release and healing—burning away ways we have suppressed, hidden, or shunned our authenticity due to attachment in order to forge new ways of being.
Our final morning together will be an integration of everything that we experienced while on retreat together. Representative of this will be the sharing of our art pieces, our creation and powerful talismans growing along with us on our journey together.
We will end in a final closing ceremony before bidding farewell—until our next meeting as sisters on the path.
Remember, nature isn’t just what’s around us…
We are nature.
How wonderful would it feel to reconnect to your ability to slow down, rest, and allow things to flow?
Wouldn’t it be a relief to let go of wanting to satisfy everyone’s needs, and instead just focus on one person–yourself?
Wouldn’t it feel amazing to realize that you actually have a choice, and that it’s not selfish of you to say “no” to other’s demands?
Can you imagine how revitalizing it would be to tune into your own needs and wants, and realize that they’re just as important as anyone else’s?
Wouldn’t it be freeing to know that you can drop whatever masks and armour that you carry in order to feel accepted or protected?
Through thoughtful teachings, and allocated time for you to simply “be” with yourself, you will feel nourished and centred, and return to your life with more clarity and a stronger sense of who you are.
Through guided practices, and circle shares, you’ll be empowered with the skills to hold space for your triggers and emotions, so that you’ll learn how to stay calm and grounded despite the chaos around you.
Through written reflections and sacred ceremony, you will give voice to your deepest truths and learn how to connect to your inner wisdom, so that you can live a life guided by what naturally calls to you.
When you come back home to your natural self, you discover that you have within you all the wisdom, support, and guidance you need to live a joyful, vibrant, and fulfilled life. It’s a matter of creating the space to reconnect within.

FAQs
Yes! If you really want to attend, but finances are a challenge right now, reach out by filling in the form below. We are happy to provide partial scholarships to women who could use the support because we know what a difference that can make.
Do I have to participate in everything?
Top of our priority is that you feel comfortable and safe. Therefore, all of our activities are voluntary. However, if you choose not to participate, we do ask that you do not disturb other retreatants.
What if I don’t know anyone and I’d be coming alone?
Sometimes, it’s better not to know anyone on these types of retreats as it allows you the space to truly let go and be yourself. Further, you will be connecting with all retreatants to make sure they are a good fit. Therefore, you will be in the company of women who share similar values.
What if I start feeling emotionally triggered?
We will be able to provide one-on-one support as needed between the 2 facilitators. Also, we will hold space for you to process and help you ground through the experience.

Your Facilitators
Marilyn Tran
As the daughter of Vietnamese parents fleeing the aftermath of war, I was born and raised in Canada feeling caught between two worlds.
While studying at Naturopathic medical school, it became apparent to me that in order to best serve my patients, I needed to address long-standing intergenerational and unresolved childhood wounds. Thus, began my healing journey.
I studied with trauma experts Gabor Maté and Richard Schwartz, became a mindfulness student of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, and became an active member and facilitator for the Toronto Women’s Circle. I have also explored the world of psychedelic medicine.
What I have learned is that as social beings, we all need community. And as spiritual beings, we all need connection to the Divine that lives in all and around us. Therefore, part of my aspiration is to create spaces and experiences to facilitate a connection to this sacredness, immersed in nature, and in the company of kindred friends.
I have done my own deep processing work and I hold profound respect for everyone on this path. My experiences have taught me that there are many layers to unfold, there’s no rush, and we are all right where we are supposed to be.
Today, I am happy to share that I have never felt more comfortable in my own skin, more sure of using my voice, and more trusting to surrender to the flow of life.
Professionally, I am a Naturopathic Doctor and support my patients in healing emotional and intergenerational wounds.
At home, I am a mom to a spirited 5-and-a-half-year-old (this distinction if very important to my son) who climbs like Spiderman and has been the best teacher on playfulness, patience, and love without conditions.
Deirdre Daniel
Hola! Hello! I’m very excited to be leading another art experience at this year’s Wild and Sacred Retreat.
I would describe myself as an artist, a grandmother, and a practicing Buddhist. For me, making art is a natural extension and expression of my everyday life and spiritual practice. The themes that I come back to again and again in are continuity, family, and the interconnectedness of the natural world. These themes rock my world! I’ve discovered that the process of making the artwork is just as important to me as the final product because it is in the making that I often discover what is truly meaningful to me.
This is the experience I have strived to bring to others in my many years as an art educator and facilitator. I have found this to be especially true when we create art in community. In fact, creating art in community is one of my great passions. I love what happens when we share our stories and insights while we are creating. It absolutely deepens the experience and imbues what is created with meaning.
My specialty is creating very safe, personal art experiences that tap into one’s personal experiences, beliefs, and aspirations. No previous art experience is required. Everyone creates a unique and powerful artwork that represents who they are, and what they think and find sacred.
I’m looking forward to our retreat where we will create little talisman books that will explore where we came from, who we are, and where we are going. How better to celebrate being Wild and Sacred…and coming back to our natural selves? I hope to see you there!
